A Positive Future for Local Government? IAG AGM and Conference We are all aware of the huge challenges facing local authorities, with a combination of ever tightening budgets, a difficult relationship with the Coalition Government and local communities in greater need. Yet we believe local authorities can come through these hard times and still be successful. We have brought together a star studded line up of speakers who can point to a positive path forward. The keynote address for this half day event comes from one of the most powerful speakers on Government, namely Lord Bichard. Lord Bichard has an ocean of experience having been both a local government Chief Executive with two Councils, and a top Civil Servant. He is currently a great supporter of local government from his seat in the Lords and is a Fellow of the Institute for Government. He will review the challenges facing local government and set out his ideas on how to challenge them. Tom Stannard, the Director of Policy and Communication at Blackburn with Darwen, will analyse new areas of public policy making in these difficult times. He will also illustrate how his Council, the only one to be awarded 'Council of the Year' twice, has had to adapt and change in the face of new challenges. We will consider how development projects can inject an economic stimulus into a local area and help to boost the success of the local authority, with John Wolfenden of JW Project Services. John has worked for a range of councils on development projects and is currently working with the London Borough of Lewisham on the Loampit Vale Project, a mixed scheme of leisure and housing. We will also be looking at the position of staff as they work through one of the most demanding periods for local authorities. We are delighted that our guide for this is Nana Amoa-Buahin, the Director of Human Resources and OD at the London Borough of Lambeth. Nana will draw on her experience to show how councils can support and encourage their staff. This CPD certified seminar will give a superb overview of current challenges, leading edge ideas on how to deal with them, and practical advice from successful councils. This is an event not to be missed! Royal Chace Hotel, Enfield
